The fluid dynamics of the Dead Sea

The unique environment of the Dead Sea, a rapidly shrinking terminal lake, drives unparalleled flow and transport processes. Its hypersaline waters, near salt saturation, couple buoyant flows with precipitation, forming massive year-round salt deposits. Summer creates a thermohaline stratification that generates descending salt fingers, while winter triggers full-water-column halite production. The rapidly receding shoreline also exposes deeply incised beaches, offering insights into ancient salt giants and arid coastline dynamics under changing water levels.

Estuarine exchange through the mixing hotspot of the Gulf/San Juan Island

We use Lagrangian particle tracking in a 3D model to dissect estuarine exchange through the mixing hotspot of the Salish Sea. By separating exchange from recirculating flows, we show that 95% of its variability is governed by the density difference and tidal mixing, simplifying the dynamics and mapping the full structure of the exchange flow.

Rheology of sediment beds and dense suspensions

Our grain-resolved simulations of sheared sediment beds provide unprecedented stress analysis, validating that established rheological models extend to pressure-driven flows. We further identify a critical solid fraction of 0.3 that separates dense and dilute rheological regimes, governed by distinct physical mechanisms.
